United Now Charges $35 for a Carry-On in Basic Economy — Here's How to Dodge It

· Trovlr

United quietly added a $35 fee for full-size carry-ons on basic economy fares for most domestic routes, effective for tickets booked from October 1, 2026. Personal items that fit under the seat are still free. The fee applies each way, so a round trip can add $70 to your ticket.

The airline says the change aligns basic economy with its ultra-low-cost competitors, but it's a real shift for travelers used to bringing a rollaboard. The fee is waived for MileagePlus Premier members, Chase United cardholders, and active-duty military. It also doesn't apply on transatlantic or transpacific basic economy fares.

If you're stuck with basic economy, the cheapest fix is to pack a backpack that fits under the seat — no fee, no gate check. Otherwise, compare the total fare including the carry-on fee against a standard economy ticket, which often costs only $40–$60 more and includes a full-size bag plus seat selection. Book with a United co-branded card and the fee disappears entirely.
