Alaska's Atmos Rewards Just Made Earning Status Cheaper — and Easier
· Trovlr
Alaska Airlines officially retired Mileage Plan on October 21, replacing it with Atmos Rewards. The new program cuts MVP Gold qualification from 40,000 to 30,000 elite-qualifying miles, and MVP from 20,000 to 15,000. For anyone chasing status on West Coast routes, that's a 25% reduction in the flying you need.
The bigger shift is partnerships. Atmos now transfers points 1:1 to 12 airlines, including American, British Airways, and Japan Airlines — up from a patchwork of ratios under Mileage Plan. Award redemptions on Alaska metal start at 5,000 points for short hops like SEA–PDX, and transcons like SEA–JFK start at 12,500 in main cabin. Cash co-pays are gone on most domestic redemptions.
Why it matters: Alaska is betting that simplicity beats the legacy programs. If you fly Alaska even six times a year, the lower thresholds make MVP Gold realistic — and the transfer partners give you a real escape valve when Alaska's own award space dries up. Check your existing Mileage Plan balance; it moved over automatically, but your elite progress reset on October 21.
