Know before you go

  • transport

Buy an EasyCard at any metro station or 7-Eleven; it works on the Taipei MRT, buses, trains, and even convenience stores. Eating or drinking on the MRT carries a fine.

  • money

Night markets and small eateries are cash-only, so keep New Taiwan Dollars on you even though cards work in malls and hotels.

  • connectivity

Grab an unlimited-data tourist SIM or eSIM at the airport; coverage is excellent and cheap, and free wifi blankets metro stations.

  • tipping

No tipping anywhere; many restaurants add a 10% service charge to the bill instead.
