Know before you go

• transport

  Ljubljana's center is car-free, and if you drive the motorways you must buy an e-vinjeta (electronic vignette) before entering them — cameras catch you and the fines sting.

• money

  It's a euro country and cards are widely accepted, but mountain huts and small farm stays often take cash only.

• etiquette

  Slovenes are reserved but warm — a 'dober dan' when entering small shops is expected, and greeting fellow hikers on alpine trails is standard practice.

• safety
