  In Bali use bank-affiliated money changers with posted rates and count your rupiah yourself before leaving the counter; the hole-in-the-wall changers with too-good rates short-count notes.

• transport

  Gojek and Grab handle rides, food, and even pharmacy runs cheaply; in some Bali villages local taxi cartels ban app pickups, so ask your driver where to stand.

• money

  Warungs and markets are cash-only, and the rupiah's zeros are confusing; 50,000 IDR is a few dollars, so double-check which note you are handing over.

• etiquette

  Use your right hand to give and receive anything, keep shoulders and knees covered in temples with a sarong, and never touch a person's head, even a child's.
