Know before you go
transport
Cyprus drives on the left and has no trains; buses are sparse outside cities, so most visitors rent a car and should book automatics early in summer.
money
The south uses the euro while the Turkish-controlled north uses the Turkish lira; bring your passport to cross the Green Line in Nicosia.
etiquette
Order Cypriot coffee by sweetness up front, sketos, metrios, or glykos, and never ask for it as Turkish or Greek coffee in the wrong half of the island.
tipping
A service charge is often included; if not, 10% in cash is generous and appreciated in tavernas.
